Marie-madeleine On Copper
"Mary Magdalene Praying" oil on copper shows the 16th-century formal tension between classicism and new concerns, in which Mary Magdalene is depicted as a sinful saint, characterized by her repentance and ecstasy. In front of her are the perfume jar or "nard vase" she used to anoint Christ's feet during the meal at Simon the Pharisee's (Gospel of Luke 7:36-50), a skull, an emblem of mortality, and a handwritten Bible. Her hair, blond or red, long and uncombed, is an allusion to her light life, but also reminds us that it was with her hair that she wiped Christ's tear-soaked feet at Simon's.
