Still Life With Fruit, 17th–18th Century
This antique still life, likely dating from the 17th or early 18th century, belongs to the tradition of fruit compositions inherited from the Italian and French schools. The basket overflowing with grapes and apples recalls still lifes from the time of Caravaggio, where light gently reveals the forms against a dark background. The overall effect is one of beautiful simplicity, with a quest for balance and realism. It is reminiscent of certain compositions found in the still lifes of Nicolas de Largillière. Please note that the painting is sold unframed. The frame shown in the photograph is virtual.
