Antique Early 19th C Oil Portrait Woman In Empire Dress On Panel Circa 1800’s
Refined Early 19th Century Portrait of a Lady in Regency Dress, Oil on Panel, in an Exceptional Giltwood Frame
An elegant and finely observed early 19th century portrait of a young lady, dating to the Regency period, circa 1800–1820, embodying the grace and understated refinement of the era.
The sitter is depicted with a poised yet intimate presence, her softly illuminated complexion set against a restrained, atmospheric ground. She wears a delicate white Empire-line gown of diaphanous quality, gathered beneath the bust and adorned with a pale blue sash, complemented by a strand of matching blue beads. The simplicity of her attire, combined with the natural treatment of her hair and expression, reflects the classical ideals and quiet sophistication synonymous with the Regency aesthetic.
Executed in oil on a wooden panel, the painting demonstrates confident draughtsmanship and a sensitive handling of light, particularly in the modelling of the face and the subtle tonal transitions of the flesh. The composition retains a pleasing immediacy and warmth, enhanced by the mellow patina acquired over two centuries.
The portrait is housed within a particularly striking and richly worked giltwood and gesso frame of substantial depth. The frame features multiple tiers of finely cast foliate ornament and scrolling decoration, creating a strong architectural presence. While likely slightly later in date, it is of excellent quality and provides a highly sympathetic and visually impressive setting for the work.
The reverse reveals the original panel construction, later reinforced and fitted with modern mounts for secure display.
A refined and decorative work of enduring appeal, equally suited to classical interiors or as a characterful counterpoint within more contemporary settings. Pieces of this nature—intimate, well-composed Regency portraits presented in such a commanding frame—are increasingly sought after for their ability to bring warmth, history, and quiet sophistication to an interior.

Condition
In good antique condition overall, commensurate with age.
The surface displays fine, stable craquelure and minor areas of wear, consistent with its period. There is evidence of light surface dirt and an aged varnish, which may be professionally cleaned if desired, though the painting currently presents with an attractive, mellow tonality.
The frame shows minor losses and rubbing to the gilding, entirely in keeping with age, and remains structurally sound and highly decorative.
