Gilded Bronze Inkwell, Empire Style, France, Circa 1810–1820
An extraordinary fire-gilded bronze inkwell from the Empire period, dating to 1810–1820 and of assured French provenance. The object features a composition of remarkable refinement: the central basin is surmounted by a figure of a winged cherub in solid bronze, characterized by a sculptural rendering of great sensitivity. The cherub, depicted in a reading pose with finely chiseled drapery, rests on a circular gilded bronze base enriched with neoclassical decorations. The ink compartment is covered by a mechanism featuring a decorated rotating disc, while on the opposite side there is a functional element for drying powder. The fire-gilding, still brilliant, enhances the quality of the modeling and the skill of the craftsmanship. An object of great value both as a writing instrument and as a decorative work of art, it bears witness to the mastery of the bronze casters of the Napoleonic era.
