Fine Restoration-period painting on vellum, signed by Joseph Heigel (Munich 1780 - Paris 1837), depicting a portrait of a man of quality circa 1820-1830. On the back of the background board is an antique label reading "Madelain, 61 rue de Provence, Paris". Antique frame from the 1830s.
Joseph Heigel was a great portrait painter of Bavarian origin, born in Munich in 1780. After studying at the Munich Academy, he moved to Paris under the Empire. He began exhibiting at the Salon under the Restoration, in 1817. He exhibited there without interruption until 1837, the year of his death in Paris. He was the father of Franz-Napoléon Heigel, born in Paris in 1813, also an excellent portrait painter, who chose to return to Munich in 1835.
