Ath 1782, Six Stock Knives, Clippele Family Solid Silver
Artist: Maître Avec Une Tête De Monstre, Philippront ?
Rare set of six Louis XV period solid silver knives with handles. Four of them are legibly hallmarked with the Ath town hallmarks for the 1782 millesime. The goldsmith's hallmark is a monster's head, probably the Philippront little fish. Two of the blades bear the poincon of the town of At in the steel blade.
All handles are engraved with the coat of arms of the Clippele family, originally from the Geraardsbergen region. Philippront made a magnificent Louis XV coffee pot engraved with the same coat of arms, which is featured in the book on Athenian silverware.
The owner was probably Franciscus de Clippele, grand bailli of Flanders, tax collector for the county of Flanders and lawyer.
