SOTTSASS Ettore (1917-2007)
Architect and designer, he occupied a prominent place in Italian design from the 1950s onwards. In the 60s, two trips - to India and the USA - turned his worldview upside down. His experiences, both mental and physical, gave rise to the Céramiques des ténèbres et des lumières series, works with simple forms - circle, line, cylinder - inspired by Tantrism. Founder of the Memphis group in 1981, Sottsass is a major figure of 20th-century design.
