Chest Of Drawers. Made By Carlo Zen, 1902
A masterful architectural design, extremely modern for its time, characterizes this piece of furniture, featuring overlapping straight or curved sloping planes with surfaces that can be smooth, fluted, or inlaid. The furniture’s architecture is complemented by precious materials such as Verona yellow marble set into marbled mahogany, where the inlays stand out.
There are two types of floral inlays, both made of maple wood with mother-of-pearl inserts, contained within a square section; in one case, they are connected by mahogany ribbons, and in the other by spiny maple branches. The same floral motif is rendered in the chiseled bronze plates that form the outlet and vent covers. The interiors are made of oak. In various places, there is an engraved metal plate bearing the inscription “CARLO ZEN MILANO.”
