18th-century Venetian Rococo Carved Gilt Wood Table-top Lectern
18th-Century Gilded Wooden Table-Top Lectern of Italian Venetian origin. The book-holder features the Baroque or Rococo design, characterized by sinuous lines and a refined yet dynamic elegance. The structure consists of a rectangular base with four slightly curved legs, which lend a sense of lightness and grace to the entire composition and a shaped apron beneath the tabletop decorated with rich carvings of foliage motifs and symmetrical scrolls converging toward a central shell-shaped element (rocaille), typical of the decorative repertoire of the period. Finally, a slanted support surface is characterized by a frame with geometric carvings engraved on a “zig-zag” or herringbone-patterned plaster ground, creating an interesting contrast with the curved lines of the base. The lectern is made of Swiss pine and features gold leaf gilding, likely applied over a red gouache ground (Armenian bolus), visible in areas of greater wear. The current patina suggests natural aging that enhances its historical charm, alternating between glossy areas and areas where the wood or white ground (plaster) is visible. The lectern shows signs of age that attest to its authenticity, such as small imperfections in the gilding and the plaster layer; the absence of a scroll on the left side of the upper cornice; and the restoration of the central shell on the back. The worn patina attests to its liturgical or domestic use since these objects were often used in private chapels to hold missals or sheet music.
