This portrait of Juan Bautista Pérez is a superb example of Spanish portrait painting in the second half of the 18th century. Stylistically linked to the Valencian school by its balance between Baroque tradition and academic rigor, it transcends the simple biographical representation of the great 16th-century Aragonese theologian and Latinist. His portrayal lends him a quasi-architectural majesty, thanks in particular to the skullcap and mozzetta of a Roman Catholic cardinal. His face, with its expressive features and profoundly intellectual gaze, is bathed in a direct light that underlines his authority as a humanist and seeker of historical truth, contrasting the warmth of his complexion with the vibrant intensity of ecclesiastical purple. The brushstrokes are firm and precise, particularly in the rendering of the buttons and folds of silk, elements that reinforce the dignity and self-assurance of the model.
