Log Tongs, Wrought-iron Pincers XVII Em, Zoomorphic, Salamander Heads.
Wrought-iron pincers for logs, pincers or estenailles XVII em.
Used in large fireplaces.
The pincers are hinged on a hinge arranged near the jaws and the branches act with greater force the longer they are.
To ensure better clamping, the ends of the jaws are square-edged, one of the jaws is cut into a hollow triangle, the other into a projecting triangle, this arrangement prevents the wood from rolling.
At the quarter of the branches, above the hinge, the blacksmith has depicted a salamander head with sharp teeth and chiseled eyes on each branch, making it an exceptional object.
Like the salamander, the pliers are not fireproof.
A similar, simpler model is shown in Raymond LECOQ's book '' les objets de la vie domestique '' published by Beranger-Levrault, page 74.
