Paul Jouve- Maurice Genevoix - The Romance Of Reynard In Two Volumes, Vialetay Editions, Circa
Artist: Maurice Genevoix Et Paul Jouve
The Romance of Reynard the Fox in Maurice Genevoix's version with illustrations by Paul Jouve, wood-engraved by Jacques, Camille, and Georges Beltrand. Paris: Valetay, 1958.
2 parts in 1 volume, quarto (38.8 x 28.4 cm), loose sheets, illustrated folded covers, slipcase and box.
First illustrated edition
by Paul Jouve.
The illustrations comprise 90 wood-engraved compositions by Jouve: 2 in black and white illustrating the covers and 88 in color (1 frontispiece highlighted in gold, 6 full-page plates, 49 within the text, and 32 initial letters).
Limited edition of 223 numbered copies, one of 113 on Rives paper (no. 99).
"Begun more than ten years earlier, The Tale of Reynard the Fox, in which Paul Jouve had invested himself completely, developing a formidable creative energy, was to be completed in June 1956, the Beltrand brothers having finished the engraving. While most publishers considered this type of luxury book unviable, Jacques Vialetay personally took an interest in the project, reviving it with Exbrayat. The book published by Éditions Vialetay would finally be marketed only in 1958, and would achieve real success from its release."
