Devotional panel with religious scenes

Boxwood, 30x19 cm; total dimensions 51x26 cm

This refined work in carved boxwood represents a cultured expression of 19th-century Neo-Gothic taste, a period in which the rediscovery of the Middle Ages became the preferred language for private devotion and high artistic craftsmanship. The central panel, characterized by the extraordinary sculptural density inherent in boxwood, is organized around a cross surrounded by six medallions depicting meticulously crafted biblical scenes: among these are the Nativity, the Adoration of the Magi, the Visitation to Saint Elizabeth, Jesus among the Doctors, and the Presentation in the Temple.

The sacred narrative extends vertically, starting from the upper tympanum populated by figures depicting the Annunciation, down to the complex and solemn depiction of the Last Supper in the lower register, where the woodcarver demonstrates rare skill in handling proportions on a small scale. On either side of the composition, on special shelves, stand the figures of Christ tied to the column and a kneeling man: the latter, portrayed in an attitude of deep contrition, is identifiable as Saint Peter at the moment of repentance.

The work is conceived as a domestic altarpiece, an object intended to furnish a private chapel or a stately study, designed to encourage close contemplation thanks to the contrasts between the partial polychromy of the figures and the warm tones of the wood. The entire sculptural ensemble is set within a gilded wooden frame that accentuates its monumental character. The pointed arch structure, adorned with quatrefoil tracery and clustered pilasters, is not merely a decorative element but a true miniature architecture, capable of elevating the object to a symbol of the refined opulence and romantic spirituality typical of the 19th century.
