Elise
Artist: S.m Elisabeth
Very fine, large portrait of Madame Elise la Borde née Roques, signed and dated S.M. Elisabeth 1891. This young woman from the upper middle class wears a "tournure" dress, a fashion launched by couturier Worth at the end of the Second Empire. As the crinoline lost its fullness, the volume of the skirt was raised at the back in puffed drapery, creating the contours of a new silhouette. To support these new inflections and variations, the faux-cul made its appearance.
