The painting, executed in oil on canvas with great finesse, depicts the most iconic and venerated devotional image in the Christian religion. The Virgin is portrayed in a three-quarter half-length portrait, in a moment of great intimacy between Mother and Son, as she tenderly cradles her Child in her arms in a protective gesture. The soft forms stand out from the dark background with an excellent sense of volume, thanks to strong light coming from outside that highlights the magnificent skin tones. The Child is not dozing in the Virgin’s arms, as in most paintings of this subject, but is fully awake and turns his wide-open eyes toward his Mother, clutching the small wooden cross to his chest, which tinges the scene with a slight melancholy, alluding to the future Passion. A green velvet cushion with gold trim, resting on a firm surface, helps the Virgin support the Child’s weight. The extraordinary movement of the hands, exquisitely rendered, is a true display of the artist’s skill.
It is a work of absolute elegance, evidently intended for private devotion, and belongs to the oeuvre of a Bolognese artist working in Carlo Cignani’s workshop.
