Large, Richly Decorated Satsuma Cup, Late 19th Century, 30cm, 2kg, One Flaw
Superb thick ceramic, corolla-shaped bowl with an undulating rim of 16 serrations.
Interior shows four young women in traditional costume heading towards an impressive Temple, richly detailed, carved, gilded and silvered, in a setting of talltrees and wisteria. Body is divided into four reserves, each containing different birds, framed by wisteria and golden flowers, featuring venerated pheasants, birds of paradise, mandarins in pairs, finely enameled, with lots of gold.
Meiji period,1880, for export to the West.
The bowl is signed on bottom, with Satsuma crest, and family name.
Good condition, with little or no wear or scratches, BUT rim shows a glued serration, visible on outside, see our 2 photos of this damage.
