Oil dimensions: 21 x 26 cm
François Burel trained in painting and sculpture at the Beaux-Arts schools in Rouen and then Paris. He then taught visual arts at the lycées in Évreux and Fécamp. Along with Jean Laperdrix, Henri Burel, Jean Lambert and Henri Grandserre, Burel was one of the founders of the Union artistique de Fécamp et du pays de Caux (UAFPC) in 1962, the year the Salon d'Yport was created. A Fécampois, he painted his town all his life, particularly seascapes.
This oil painting is atypical in the diversity of its colors, Burel often preferring geometric seascapes painted in variations of blue. Here, red, yellow and violet elements enhance the composition, particularly the sails. In the background, the city's cliffs can be seen, beneath which the beachgoers are barely sketched. Only the horizon line is straight, yet the composition is remarkably balanced.
