Meissen - Porcelain Grupe The Rape Of Europa
Meissen porcelain group from the mythology series depicting Europa (Europa auf dem Stier). She wears roses in her hair, seated on the bull (Zeus). In the foreground, a kneeling woman offers roses in a basket, while on the side, a seated woman decorates the bull with rose garlands. Designed by Johann Friedrich Eberlein circa 1748. In Greek mythology, upon seeing Europa, Zeus is said to have fallen in love with her beauty and grace, and immediately implemented a very clever plan. To avoid triggering the hatred of his jealous wife Hera and to be able to make his way to the young girl, Zeus decided to metamorphose into a ravishing white bull.
