Painting Depicting “la Punta Della Dogana” - Giacomo Guardi

A striking lagoon view by Giacomo Guardi (Venice, 1764–1835), a member of the famous family of Venetian landscape painters and a refined interpreter of Venice between the 18th and 19th centuries. The work depicts Punta della Dogana, the iconic meeting point between the Grand Canal and the Giudecca Canal, rendered with an atmospheric sensitivity typical of the artist’s work.
Painted in oil on canvas, the composition opens onto a vast expanse of water animated by gondolas, cargo boats, and sailing ships, evoking the lively commercial and daily pulse of the Serenissima. In the background, the architectural silhouette of the Dogana da Mar emerges, with its characteristic tower topped by a golden sphere, while the clear light of the Venetian sky is delicately reflected on the calm waters of the lagoon.
The loose and luminous brushwork, combined with the refined perspective and color rendering, highlights the legacy of the Venetian veduta tradition inaugurated by his father Francesco Guardi, reinterpreted here with a more intimate and lyrical sensibility. The work conveys a suspended and poetic atmosphere, in which the urban landscape blends harmoniously with the marine setting.
