Lovely oil painting by Charles PÉCRUS depicting the rue du Mont-Cenis in Montmartre around 1880, animated with characters.

Although he produced many genre scenes at the beginning of his career and then seascapes imitating the style of Eugène BOUDIN, this view of Montmartre is rare in his production and recalls the works of Stanislas LÉPINE, painted at the same time.

For comparison, the last photo shows an engraving by Eugène DELÂTRE produced in 1891, illustrating an identical view of the rue du Mont-Cenis.

BIOGRAPHY:
Pécrus began his career in Paris at the Ponts-et-Chaussés, where his superior noticed his talent for drawing and encouraged him to study at an art school.
Pécrus studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris with Eugène Fichel. He also visited the Louvre to copy works by old masters.
From 1857, he exhibited interior scenes at the salon of the Société des Artistes Français, which brought him success, notably "Femmes à la Toilette, Départ pour le Bal".
He met the painters Eugène BOUDIN, Johan Barthold JONGKIND and Alfred STEVENS, who encouraged him to paint outdoors. Pécrus joined BOUDIN in Trouville and discovered Impressionism. In 1865, his painting "Le lendemain des noces" was bought by Napoleon III.
Pécrus set up his studio at 31 rue Fontaine, not far from his friend Boudin's studio. Following Jongkind's advice, Pécrus gradually abandoned genre painting after 1870 and devoted himself increasingly to Impressionist painting of landscapes and seascapes. But it was not until around 1885 that he almost completely abandoned genre painting. He painted in Brittany and Normandy, on the Mediterranean, in Holland and in Venice, and exhibited his landscape "Cows on the Banks of the Allier" at the Salon of 1890. In 1892, he exhibited his first seascape, "Washers on the Touque".
He exhibited at the Salon for the last time in 1905 and, despite his declining strength, continued to paint until his death in 1907.

His works are present in many museums: Orsay, Dieppe, Reims, Saint-Lô, Cherbourg...
