Work description
This remarkable 19th-century Aubusson tapestry depicts a pastoral
idyllic scene, heir to the great galant compositions of the 18th century. The work is
distinguished by its dynamic composition and harmonious color palette,
blending deep greens, warm ochres and azure blues.
Subject and Composition
At the center of the composition, a group of villagers and shepherds come to life on a
country path. The eye is immediately drawn to the narrative details:
The musical procession: A young man plays the chalumeau (country flute),
rhythmizing the group's march. At his side, an elegant peasant woman gracefully carries
a basket of foliage on her head.
Pastoral life: On the left, a shepherd guides a flock of sheep
to pasture, accompanied by his faithful guard dog, a symbol of
vigilance.
Landscape setting: The scene is framed by lush "verdure". The
trees, with their finely crafted foliage, provide
exceptional depth. In the background, noble architecture reminiscent of a château
or bastide dominates the valley, setting the scene in an estate
seigneurial.
The Border
The whole is magnified by a wide border richly decorated with a
continuous garland of varied flowers (roses, peonies and field flowers) linked by
rubbings. This border, characteristic of Aubusson productions, acts like a
picture frame, emphasizing the decorative and luxurious aspect of the piece.
Stylistic expertise
Although executed in the 19th century, this tapestry brilliantly recaptures the codes of the
rocaille style. It bears witness to the skills of Aubusson weavers, who were able to perpetuate
the tradition of genre scenes inspired by the works of painters such as
François Boucher or Jean-Baptiste Oudry. This is a large-scale piece,
ideal for dressing a grand salon or a characterful dining room.
