Lucien Joseph Coront Ducluzeau, known as Joseph Coront, was a symbolist painter of the Lyon School of the late 19th century. He painted mainly landscapes and portraits in oil and pastel (Musée des Beaux arts de Nantes, Musée Rolin d'Autun, Musée d'Annonay in the Ardèche and Musée des Beaux Arts de Nîmes (portrait of the sculptor Vidal)).
An inscription on the back indicates that this is a "painting by Joseph Coront Ducluzeau in 1902" and that it is "Marie Joséphine Jeanne Angèle Coront Ducluzeau Rey". "Born in 1884", Marie Joséphine is eighteen years old. She was the daughter of the artist's brother André Jules Henri Coront. She is shown here as a stage actress. We know of a portrait of the famous actress Cécile Sorel by Nadar, circa 1900, with the same costume.
