English general and statesman, John Churchill was one of the greatest military leaders of modern Europe. Close to power during the reigns of William III and Queen Anne, he distinguished himself especially during the War of the Spanish Succession, where his decisive victories, notably at Blenheim (1704), held back the expansion of Louis XIV's France. Awarded the title of duke, he embodied the ideal of the victorious commander and servant of the state. His official image, often painted in armor as on our work, helped forge his political and military legend.
