Large late 18th-century gilded wood panel, finely carved and gilded with gold leaf, featuring a high-relief decoration of an Athenian perfume burner flanked by satyr masks and punctuated by a spiral of flowering foliage, the whole resting on a large acanthus leaf forming an architectural bracket, with a cream relacquered counter-ground.Perfume burners in this class were most often inspired by paintings from Pompeii and Herculaneum, while most of the figures in this style derive from classical mythology, in particular the stories surrounding Dionysus. Quality French work attributable to sculptors Jean-Louis Prieur, dit l'Aîné (1732-1795) Claude-Nicolas Ledoux (1736-1806) or Victor Louis (1731-1800) Good overall condition, fine gilding, later gilded wood frame dating from the mid-19th century.
