Gilt Silver Ciborium, France Circa 1820, City Of Pau
Gilt silver ciborium. The structure and decoration of this ciborium place it squarely within the common models of the first quarter of the 19th century. The circular, slightly domed foot is chased with rosettes on the cavetto. The base features a decoration of vine bunches, reeds, and palmettes, arranged on a guilloché background and framed with scrolls reminiscent of cut leather motifs. The stem is adorned with an inverted pear-shaped knot, framed by rings decorated with gadroons and twists. The domed lid is embellished with a corolla of water leaves and surmounted by a small cross (probably restored later). French work, circa 1820. 950/1000 silver, hallmark with the head of an old woman (Pau department). Maker's mark: initials JL in a vertical lozenge, flanked by two dots (one above and one below).
