HENRI BURDAN (Lyon, 1866-1944)
Child with dove
Circa1900
Plaster, green patina
41 x 31 x 24 cm
Signed: HBURDAN
A sculptor from Lyon, Henri Burdan was apprenticed to La Maison Vermare (a company specialising in run religious statues run by Pierre Vermare), and also attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Lyon were he was taught by the sculptor Charles Dufraine. Burdan regularly exhibited at the Salon des artistes lyonnais, and the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon holds three of his sculptures. This charming work depicting a naked child on a rustic bench holding a bird, seems to play between the sacred and the profane.
