Pair Of Large Medici Vases, Second Half Of The 19th Century
Pair of large gilded bronze and Sienna yellow marble Medici vases from the second half of the 19th century in the Empire style
Pair of chased gilded bronze Medici-shaped vases, resting on high quadrangular bases in Sienna yellow marble, in the neoclassical taste of the First Empire.
The vases rest on a gadrooned body, supported by a pedestal decorated with stylized water leaves and palmettes. The side grips take the form of richly sculpted rams' heads, an emblematic motif of antique decorative vocabulary revived under the Empire, symbolizing both strength and prestige.
The veined yellow marble bases accentuate the imposing appearance of the object.
The quality of the chasing, particularly in the gadroons, beaded friezes and animal mascarons, testifies to the work of a Parisian workshop.
These objects could have been intended to adorn a console, a vestibule or a grand salon, in an aristocratic or bourgeois interior inspired by Antiquity rediscovered at the end of the 18th century and under Napoleon I.
