Charming pet kennel in the tasteful Louis XV style, aptly echoing the decorative codes of small 18th-century tapestry furniture.

By the end of the 17th century, the very term "kennel" was appearing in inventories, gradually replacing the older terms "chest" or "dog crate." These objects, intended for aristocratic pets, took on a new dimension in the 18th century: as genuine elements of interior design, they were conceived as small pieces of furniture in their own right, often entrusted to upholsterers for their upholstery, and adopting the forms and ornamentation of the Louis XV or Louis XVI styles.

Our model is fully in keeping with this formal tradition. The structure, in molded and carved wood, features a curved silhouette on all four sides, resting on small scrolled feet. The front is enlivened by a curved opening with a scrolled profile, framed by upholstered panels and highlighted by a decoration of tapestry nails with gilded heads, taken directly from the vocabulary of the furniture industry.

The structure is painted in shades of pale gray, with gold highlights. The whole has a deliberately aged patina, with slight wear in appearance, intended to restore the character of antique furniture.

The entire piece is covered with a blue damask fabric, carefully applied to the top, sides and even inside the niche. The cushion forming the bed is also upholstered in the same fabric, ensuring perfect visual continuity and testifying to seamless upholstery work.

The shape of this niche is similar to that of a "stool", a well-documented typology that provides both shelter for the animal and additional seating. This dual use corresponds to the evolution of these objects in the 18th century, when they became an integral part of salon furniture, intended for small pleasure dogs such as pugs or miniature spaniels.

Beyond its function, this piece is part of a decorative tradition where the pet finds its place in a well-cared-for interior, right down to the detail of its furniture. Good overall condition, with slight wear to the patina.
