Print By Goupil & Cie, Ca. 1850, From A Painting By Robert Leopold, In A Gold-plated Frame
Print of a painting by Robert Louis Leopold, engraved by Gautier and published by Goupil & Cie. The painting (1830), titled "L'arrivée des moissonneurs dans les marais Pontins" (The Arrival of the Reapers in the Pontine Marshes), is now housed in the Louvre. It is a successful subject created during the painter's trip to Italy, highlighting the presence of bandits in the Pontine area. This print is part of the extensive production published and sold by Maison Goupil, dating from around 1850, when the artistic house took the corporate name "GOUPIL & Cie." At that time, the Gallery boasted its presence in several European cities, as well as in New York, believing it appropriate to promote the beauty of European art overseas. The print is in a contemporary frame, decorated and gilded with gold leaf. France, ca. 1850.
