The ARTIST
A student of history painter Gabriel Biard, Demarne drew his inspiration from the Dutch painters of the
XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries, very much in vogue in Paris in the 1780s. After graduating from the Académie, he and the painter Taunay made a trip to Switzerland in 1783. He drew much of his inspiration from major Dutch painters such as Jan Both and Nicholas Berchem, while adding
his personal touch, for the
sky and characters with smiling faces, and the animals of Paulus Potter, all of which are quiet and serene
and foreshadow pre-Romanticism.
