On February 16, 1899, French President Félix Faure died suddenly at the Élysée Palace, leaving France in a state of national stupor. His death occurred in a particularly tense political context: the Dreyfus Affair had deeply divided French society, and Faure, a conservative authority figure and staunchly anti-Dreyfus, was seen by many as a bulwark against a review of the trial.
On February 23, 1899, Paris came to a standstill. Hundreds of thousands of Parisians lined the route of the official funeral procession, which crossed the capital from the Élysée Palace to Versailles. The Hôtel de Ville esplanade became one of the focal points of this unprecedented popular and military gathering.
