Francesco Simonini, a Parma-born painter active mainly in Venice during the first half of the eighteenth century, is best known for his battle scenes and figure-animated landscapes, in which he demonstrates confident command of natural settings and human movement.

The present painting depicts a riverside harbour landscape with a medieval tower at the centre of the composition, set against a mountainous background. In the foreground, along the shore, groups of popular figures animate the scene, fishermen, travellers, a laden donkey, while to the left sails and boats cross the calm waters. The figures, handled with ease and vitality, recall the Venetian tradition of the animated landscape of the early eighteenth century, with stylistic affinities attributable to Simonini in the typology of the figures and the construction of space through receding planes toward a luminous background.
