18th-century Aubusson Tapestry

Large example of an 18th-century Franco-Belgian tapestry.

In the Netherlands, they are often referred to as "Gobelins", but this is not a generic term for all antique tapestries. Gobelin was merely a highly reputed tapestry manufacturer.

Our example comes from France and dates from the 18th century.

On this 18th-century tapestry, we can see an idyllic wooded landscape. In the foreground are tall trees with dense foliage, in shades of dark green with lighter accents on the leaves. Between the trees is a clearing with water, perhaps a river or pond, with plants and bushes growing along the bank.

In the background is a lighter, almost golden landscape, creating depth, with hills or fields in the distance. The whole gives off a soothing, almost dreamlike atmosphere, typical of pastoral representations of this period.

Wear marks in keeping with its age and usual for tapestries of this period. Restored in various places. See photos. Please contact us for a video or other photos.
