Important brown patina bronze with cloisonné enamel depicting the Bodhisattva seated on an elephant
This sculpture represents Samantabhadra (Puxian), one of the four great Bodhisattvas of Chinese Buddhism. Here, the Buddhist deity is associated with Benevolence.
The elephant he rides symbolizes tamed strength and wisdom.
The elephant is made in cloisonné enamel with a decoration of scrolls, lotus flowers and geometric motifs delineated by fine copper ribbons and filled with polychrome enamels dominated by turquoise blue, typical of the Qing period.
