Large Meiji Japanese Box Signed Yoshimichi Kyoto
Important Meiji period (late 19th - early 20th century) circular Japanese box in patinated metal, of very large size.
The lid is finely decorated in relief and polychrome inlays, depicting a naturalistic scene with a bird perched on a flowering branch, a turtle at the water's edge and delicately stylized vegetation. The workmanship of the various alloys and shades of metal testifies to refined craftsmanship.
The base bears an engraved Japanese signature "西京 義道 造" (Saikyō Yoshimichi), indicating manufacture in Kyoto by the master Yoshimichi.
Note a few losses of inlays, visible on the photos
