A Series Of Four Engravings From Tasso’s *jerusalem Delivered* – Bernardo Castello, 18th Century
Artist: Bernardo Castello
An important suite of four etchings based on Torquato Tasso’s famous *Gerusalemme Liberata*, one of the greatest masterpieces of Renaissance epic literature. The compositions are derived from drawings by Bernardo Castello (1557–1629), the artist behind the well-known series of illustrations created for the first editions of the poem between the late 16th and early 17th centuries. The scenes depict episodes from the chivalric and military narrative of the First Crusade, rendered in a lively and detailed manner, characterized by a dense interweaving of figures, idealized architecture in the background, and a typically Mannerist perspective.Of particular interest are the richly engraved architectural frames that enclose the scenes, adorned with cherubs, volutes, and decorative motifs, conceived as full-fledged scenographic elements. At the bottom of some plates, the abbreviation “Ber. Caste…” is visible, likely referring to the artist of the drawings, while the initials “C.C.F.” probably indicate the engraver or publisher. The four engravings are mounted in a single large carved and gilded wooden frame from a later period, which gives the ensemble a strong decorative impact.Period: 18th centuryTechnique: etching on paperDimensions of engravings (on plate): 18.5 x 27.5 cm eachOverall dimensions with frame: 84 x 98 cmCondition: Good overall condition.
