19th Century Box In Sterling Silver
Nineteenth-century sterling silver box
Elegant oval box in solid silver, work of the second half of the 19th century, of great finesse of execution.
The lid is adorned with two medallions in relief depicting antique-style profiles, treated in the neoclassical taste. These portraits, inspired by 18th-century effigies, most likely evoke idealized figures in the style of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette, without it being possible to assert a formal identification, as is often the case in this type of historicist production.
The overall decoration is in keeping with a highly characteristic Louis XVI vocabulary: laurel garlands, ribboned bows, beaded friezes and delicately chased frames. The girdle of the box elegantly repeats these decorative elements, underlining the quality of the goldsmith's work.
Very beautiful display or collector's item, combining decorative refinement and material quality.
