Joseph Pollard (1853-1922) Bronze Sculpture With Medal Patina .
Joseph Pollard (1853-1922)
Sculpture in bronze with medal patina depicting an elegant female figure in graceful, sensual movement, arms raised in an almost choreographic attitude, capturing the light with subtlety.
Work by Belgian sculptor Joseph Pollard, born in Liège and trained at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in his native city before continuing his apprenticeship in Paris. Winner of a grant from the Fondation Darchis, he spent time in Rome between 1879 and 1884, a decisive period when he became deeply immersed in Italian classical aesthetics.
This influence can be seen here in his treatment of the body: supple modeling, harmonious proportions and the search for a timeless feminine ideal. Pollard developed a body of work blending allegorical figures, mythological compositions and genre scenes, with a particular sensitivity to feminine movement and grace.
On his return to Belgium, he settled in Brussels and notably became director of the École des Beaux-Arts d'Uccle, actively contributing to the influence of Belgian sculpture at the end of the 19th century.
The present bronze, signed on the base, as well as by the founder V. Dubois, foundryman in Brussels, perfectly illustrates this quest for elegance and fluidity. The slender, almost dancing pose, combined with a beautiful, nuanced patina, lends the piece great modernity, while remaining rooted in academic tradition.
The present bronze is a perfect illustration of this quest for elegance and fluidity.
A high-quality decorative work, both expressive and refined, typical of Belgian sculpture of the Belle Époque.
