This scene is treated with a very light, impressionistic touch, and Jules René Hervé's technique is easily recognizable. In fact, he is considered "the last of the Impressionist painters".
Vuillard's influence can be seen in the treatment of the young elegant women's faces, especially the one in the lower right.
Jules René Hervé was born in Langres in 1887 and died in the same town in 1981.
He moved to Paris in 1908 to study at the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs. His teachers were Ferdinand Cormon and Jules Adler.
He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1910.
In 1925, he received a gold medal and other awards followed, including another gold medal at the Exposition Universelle in 1937.
Some of his paintings are exhibited in museums all over the world: New-York, Chicago, Casablanca, Paris, Langres, Dijon, Calais etc.
This oil on cardboard is presented in its original lightly gilded carved wooden frame. It is signed on the lower right and countersigned on the back.
It also bears the stamp of a Paris gallery on the back.
