Louis Cabié (1853-1939) La Garonne à Port-neuf - Camblanes - Gironde
Artist: Louis-alexandre Cabié
Louis-Alexandre CABIÉ
(Dol-de-Bretagne 1853 - Bordeaux 1939)
The Garonne at Port-Neuf - Camblanes
Oil on panel
H. 22 cm; W. 27 cm
Signed lower left, dated
1929
Provenance: Private collection, Bordeaux.
Louis Cabié, a renowned artist in France, and particularly in the Bordeaux region, traveled extensively throughout southwestern France during his lifetime. A student of Harpignies, whose passion for vegetation is reminiscent of the Barbizon school, he continued to capture the simplicity of picturesque French landscapes until his death. Spectacular trees, forest settings, places steeped in history, enchanting valleys, or even landscapes in their purest form, which he imbued with a vibrant contrast.
A discreet figure in the artist's life, Louis Cabié lived part-time in Portets around 1910-1930. Whether he owned or rented the property is difficult to determine today. Nevertheless, several views of his garden exist, and numerous landscapes of the banks of the Garonne are known. Our work, a composition of which, painted from the opposite direction, exists from the same year, is open in its center to a path, painted with broad strokes. On the left, the Garonne River is revealed, discreet in its shades of yellow and green, in a composition typical of the painter's style, where foliage dominates. This panel, from 1929, belongs to the artist's final period.
We are seeking any works or information relating to the artist in order to complete his biography and a catalogue raisonné currently being compiled.
