Louis XVI Ormolu Mantel With Mercury Ernest Royer
Artist: Ernest Royer Bronzier
Louis XVI style mantel set in gilded bronze with mercury, made by the Paris bronzier Ernest Royer. This three-part set comprises:
- an imposing Louis XVI-style clock (15kg) in gilded bronze with mercury, the fine gold is either amatized or polished with agate for full brilliance. Resting on a projecting base, the dial is set in a large fluted vase, with scrolled brackets on the sides decorated with plant and floral motifs. The top of the clock is crowned by a covered vase embellished with oak branch garlands. The enameled dial, in perfect condition, is double-numbered in blue and black, with openwork gilt bronze hands. The dial is signed Ernest Royer, rue des filles du calvaire in Paris, successor to Gervais. His references can be found in the Tardy dictionary of watchmakers.
- A pair of large candelabras (67cm) accompany the clock, echoing its decorative register, they rest on a circular base. Three scrolled brackets form the openwork shaft. A vase gathers five peripheral arms of light, meeting to let out a central sixth ending in a flame-shaped extinguisher.
This composition, with its fine chasing, retains its beautiful original mercury gilding. Bronzemaker Ernest Royer applied all his expertise!
The original clock mechanism is functional! Supplied with the period balance and winding lacl.
