Antique-style Bust Of Venus In Translucent Marble - Souvenir Du Grand Tour, 19th Century

Charming translucent marble bust (alabaster type) representing a young woman in the antique style, most likely an idealized figure of Venus, made in the first half of the 19th century.

The work is immediately seductive for its soft modeling and the luminous quality of the stone, whose translucency accentuates the rendering of flesh and lends the sculpture a delicate, sensual presence.

The head, gracefully tilted to the left, the half-closed eyes and the soothed features convey an inspiration directly derived from neoclassical aesthetics.

The finely sculpted hair is treated in an elaborate chignon embellished with waving strands and pearls, testifying to the meticulous, decorative workmanship characteristic of Italian productions aimed at Grand Tour enthusiasts.

This type of sculpture was prized by cultivated 19th-century travelers, bringing back from Italy works inspired by antiquity, in a spirit that was both archaeological and decorative.

The bust rests on a pedestal in polychrome marble (black and sea green), brought in from the Napoleon III period.
