Gabriel Déneux - Paris, Pont Mirabeau - 28 X 43 Cm Old Post-impressionist Pointillist Painting
Artist: Gabriel Déneux
Gabriel Déneux (1856 - 1943)
A student of Alexandre Cabanel and Jean-Léon Gérôme at the Beaux-arts de Paris, Gabriel Déneux was a painter marked by Orientalism, but his varied work also shows an interest in scenes of city life, beaches, the Pont-Aven region and Paris. An inquisitive student, he traveled to Greece and Sicily to learn about ancient techniques.
The painting depicts the Quai de Javel and the Pont Mirabeau in Paris. A pencil annotation on the reverse of the frame shows that this painting was also entitled "Le Chaland".
Particularly interesting is the fact that, on the back of the cardboard, the painter has explained the technique used to produce his painting, namely Athenian enameling:
"Fire painting, according to the unalterable encaustic process of Egypt and ancient Greece. - Never varnish - "
One must really enjoy the syncretism of ancient techniques and the post-impressionist style of the time with which Gabriel Déneux paints the Paris still punctuated by industrial chimneys.
The work is presented in a frame sculpted by Gabriel Déneux himself.
Dimensions: 28 x 43 cm
Signed lower right
Condition: small lack of paint in the sky
Visible in Paris
n.b. A painting also done in encaustic and of similar size (27 x 40 cm) depicting Concarneau "Lever de lune à Concarneau" was sold for 1400€ on June 24, 2009
