Hotei, Bizen, Stoneware, Japan, 19th-20th Centuries
This Bizen stoneware figurine depicts a smiling figure, traditionally identified as Budai (known in Japan as Hotei) - the "Laughing Buddha". He is the symbol of happiness, prosperity and abundance. The figure leans on a large, bulging bag (sewn or tied at the front with a thick rope). This bag traditionally contains treasures or gifts for those in need. At the top of the bag, the figure holds in his hand a fan-like object (uchiwa), which was used to "chase away" misfortunes.
