Vase With Peonies, Cloisonné, Japan, Meiji Period (1868-1912).
Vase made using the cloisonné technique (cloisonné enamel on a copper vessel). It is adorned with a floral motif that is richly symbolic in Japanese culture. Peonies (Botan): Dominant flowers, white and yellow, symbolizing royalty, honor, wealth and feminine beauty. Chrysanthemums (Kiku): Smaller, darker flowers on the left, symbolizing longevity and imperial lineage. Cherry blossoms (Sakura): the white blossoms on the upper branches symbolize the transience of life and rebirth. Narcissus: visible at the back of the vase, they symbolize purity and the arrival of spring.
