Late 18th Century German School,
Artist: Suiveur De Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich (dit Dietricy)
Charming genre scene depicting a fiddler in action in front of a tavern. In the foreground, the musician, dressed in a brightly-colored coat and wearing a feathered hat, plays his violin with a cheerful expression. Behind him, a figure smokes quietly, accentuating the familiar, popular atmosphere of the scene. A few still-life elements - a pitcher and a glass - enrich the composition.
The palette is warm and deep, with a marked chiaroscuro that highlights the figures and underlines the intimate character of the subject.
This work is a late 18th-century revival based on a model by Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich (1712-1774), known as Dietricy.A German painter active in Dresden, Dietrich was renowned for his numerous compositions inspired by the 17th-century Flemish masters, notably Adriaen Brouwer and Adriaen van Ostade. He produced a large number of scenes of musicians and taverns, which were widely distributed and reproduced.
The composition presented here faithfully reproduces this type of subject, characterized by:
- close framing of the figures
- highly expressive faces
- the atmosphere of a popular genre scene
- a taste for light and material effects
Good overall condition.Cracks and wear consistent with age.
Old restorations possible.
