Giuseppe Varotti - Bologna - Signed Oil - Madonna Saint Catherine Vigri With Child And Angel
Artist: Giuseppe Varotti (1715 - 1780)
Giuseppe Varotti (Bologna, 1715 - 1780)
Madonna and Saint Catherine Vigri with Child and an Angel
Oil on canvas, 153 x 115 cm. Signed on the stretcher: Mr. Giuseppe Varotti F.
Bibliography:
Immagine, meditazione, visione”, Volume Ventinovesimo, Roma 2016.
As Renato Roli observed, this painting constitutes “a kind of connection between the art of Vittorio Bigari and that of Ubaldo Gandolfi, whose influence emerges above all in the figure of the angel, shaped with assured mastery and a lightness of touch. The entire composition is orchestrated so as to enclose the two principal figures within a single arching structure which, being a vision, leaves them suspended upon a soft cushion of clouds. Yet the detail of the candlesticks and lilies upon the ledge remains strikingly concrete, forming a natura morta rendered with sincere naturalistic clarity.”
