Venus Bust
White marble bust of Venus, Neoclassical period, early 19th century
Charming, finely carved white marble bust of Venus, goddess of love and beauty in Greco-Roman mythology. This work is fully in keeping with the neoclassical aesthetic of the early 19th century, drawing its inspiration from ancient models rediscovered in the 18th century.
The face, idealized according to ancient canons, presents regular, soothed features: unobstructed forehead, straight nose, delicately hemmed mouth. The gaze, deliberately absent of incised pupils, reinforces the impression of timeless serenity typical of antique sculpture and its neoclassical reinterpretations.
The hair is particularly meticulous, organized in soft waves framing the face and held back by a finely detailed floral crown, a motif associated with the goddess and frequent in representations inspired by Antiquity. The back of the head is treated with the same care, testifying to the quality of the workmanship.
The bust rests on a turned pedestal also in marble, probably added or slightly later, ensuring an elegant and balanced presentation of the whole.
