A vivid and pulsating testimony to 17th-century Dutch genre painting from the brush of Jan Vincentz van der Vinne, this refined composition depicts a horse market. The work, an oil on canvas, is fully immersed in the Flemish and Dutch tradition that sees the market not only as a place of commercial exchange, but as a true social stage where lives, hierarchies, and daily dynamics intertwine. The painting opens onto a town square dominated by severe and slender architecture, typical of the cityscape of the Netherlands, where a medieval tower stands out, observing the excitement below from above. At the center of the scene, the narrative becomes dynamic: the observer's gaze is immediately captured by a knight riding a superb bay steed who hints at a surge. The man wears a conspicuous red jacket, a deliberate color accent that serves as the visual fulcrum of the entire composition. Next to him, a merchant or buyer in cerulean dress appears engaged in a negotiation, with gestures suggesting a dense and lively dialogue. Shifting his attention to the right side of the canvas, van der Vinne showcases his skill in portraying equine anatomy. A group of horses, including magnificent grey and white specimens, are carefully examined by male figures wrapped in dark cloaks and wide-brimmed hats. The light, soft and diffused under a sky furrowed by vaporous clouds, caresses the animals' coats and the fabrics of their clothes, giving an atmospheric depth that invites the observer to physically "enter" the fair space. The presence of a dog in the foreground and small surrounding figures in the background helps create the effect of verisimilitude and teeming daily life that made the Dutch school famous around the world. The signature, placed at the bottom right, seals the authenticity of a piece that finds its rightful scientific place in the databases of the RKD (Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie), the institute for documenting the history of art in the Netherlands.

Jan Vincentz van der Vinne (Haarlem, 1663 - 1721) was a prominent member of a celebrated dynasty of artists active in Haarlem. A direct descendant of the better-known Vincent Laurensz. van der Vinne, he inherited not only his name but also a profound sensitivity to landscape and costume scenes. According to the RKD (Royal College of the Art), with the exception of a brief stay in England between 1686 and 1688, he worked in Haarlem, like his brothers, the painters Laurens and Isaac. His artistic production reflects a moment of transition in which the rigor of the Dutch Golden Age begins to dialogue with eighteenth-century softness. Van der Vinne did not limit himself to painting, but was also a skilled draftsman, specializing in city views, Italian landscapes and horse portraits. His ability to blend the almost scientific observation of detail with a poetic rendering of light made him an exceptional visual chronicler of the society of his time, capable of ennobling common scenes such as a horse market, transforming them into works of great balance and aesthetic dignity.
