Italian Commode, Partially Gilded And Painted, Milan, Circa 1760-1770
Painted molded top, above a pull-out shelf with a red leather writing surface and three long drawers.
Literature
As noted by Italian art historian Giuseppe Beretti (G. Beretti, Il Mobile dei Lumi, Milan, 2010, p. 72), this is one of the few examples of lacquered furniture produced in Milan in the last quarter of the 18th century. The scrolled foot resting on a raised base is typically Milanese and is found on a similar painted chair, photographed in the Sala dell'Olimpo in Palazzo Attendolo Bolognini.
